UIC Jazz Ensemble: Concert Analysis

John Wojciechowski, who is an accomplished, thoughtful saxophonist, performed with the UIC Jazz Ensemble as their featured guest soloist. He performed with the ensemble the songs “Focus,” “Title,” “Lion and the Lamb,” “Lexicon,” “Ternary,” and “Push.” His saxophone techniques varied from songs to song, but most of the songs were smooth and tranquil except for “Push.” So, for most of Wojciechowski performances it created a peaceful mood among the audience because of the less dynamic progression in the songs. However, the last song Wojciechowski played, “Push,” it changed the entire atmosphere from serene to passionate because of the fast, erratic saxophone solo in the beginning. Naturally, people would wait until a song has ended to applaud, so it would not interrupt the flow of the performance, but it was different during the UIC jazz concert. When individual solos finished for each song, the director would direct the audience to applaud, even though it interrupted the song and the mood. In addition, while watching the musicians perform their deep passion for jazz could be seen from their facial expressions and body movements; the way their face contorted to each beat and the way their feet tap along to the music revealed their excitement when performing. So, nothing beats the satisfaction and exhilaration a person feels when seeing a concert performed live. Jazz has the power to surprise the listeners by its many styles and forms that make jazz
