The novels Night by Elie Weasel and Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, both illustrate how life before a catastrophe can determine your fate, and the processes of both main characters to survive during them.
Before the catastrophes both characters were obedient, innocent, and set on achieving their goals, which in the end led to higher/lower chances of survival.
