In the novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, it tells a story of a young runner from the US that gets drafted into World War 2 in 1941 in order to protect his country. Long before WWII would begin their was a political party known as the German Workers Party which later became known as the Nazi Party in Germany, the leader of the group was known as Adolf Hitler who first joined in 1919. Many historians believe that the real cause of the second world war was the signing of the Treaty of Versailles which heavily punished Germany for all its wrongdoing in World War I. The punishments included setbacks such as paying back money, losing land, and decreasing their military size drastically. The main battles the US participated in were mostly fought on the pacific front against Japan overseas. For example the Battle of Midway that occurred on June 4th 1942 was one of the most important battles America have ever fought. The engagement was with the Japanese, the US was at a huge disadvantage when it came to the amount of ships, airplanes, and submarines they had because of the heavy hit they got just 6 months earlier at Pearl Harbor. The combat lasted for over 3 days and in the end the United States made Japan retreat with the result of the US winning one of its crucial victories. The Japanese lost close to 2,500 men, four carriers, one cruiser, and 290 of aircraft, while the United States lost around 300 men, one carrier, one destroyer, and over 110 aircraft. The war lasted a full 6 years of non-stop blood shed. Germany surrendered on May 7th 1945 just after Hitler's own suicide death bringing an end to the conflict in Europe. Japan then unconditionally surrendered on September 2nd 1945 just after the two atomic bombs that were dropped on top of Hiroshima killing approximately 96,000-146,00 people and in Nagasaki killing approximately 39,000-80,000
