“Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though sometimes it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward.” This quote by Henry Ford explains his determination to never give up, encouraged to become one of the biggest car manufacturers in America. Laura Hillenbrand’s nonfiction book Unbroken, tells the story of Louie Zamperini, Russell Allen Phillips and many others during the Second World War. Like Ford, Louie was determined-determined to live. Through all the hardships he endured, the crash of his plane The Green Hornet, the 47 days afloat at sea, the death of a friend, the capture by the Japanese to become a P.O.W, Louie found God.

In the first years of Louie’s life he played the Robin Hood of Torrance, California. Smart and brave, Louie quickly adopted his own means of survival: “If it was edible, Louie stole it. He skulked down alleys, a roll of lock picking wire in his pocket. Housewives who stepped from their kitchens would return to find their suppers has disappeared” (6).
