The article, Aged garlic extract lowers blood pressure in patients with treated but uncontrolled hypertension: A randomised controlled trial was written by authors Karin Ried, Oliver Frank and Nigel Stocks. This study was designed to answer the question as to whether patients with treated but uncontrolled hypertension could tolerate, accept and effectively use aged garlic extract as a supplementary treatment to their antihypertensive medication. They hypothesized the study to be a success due to the antihypertensive properties of garlic linking to intracellular processes that cause a reduction in blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure will be discussed more than diastolic blood pressure due to only few patients having diastolic hypertension in comparison to systolic. The trial was based on a small sample size made of up 50 adult patients with uncontrolled hypertension of whom were already taking antihypertensive medication. The last one given at the 12 week mark also assessed acceptability and ease of use as well as willingness of the patients to continue trial treatment on a long term basis. Throughout the trial, one patient from the placebo control group did not follow up and three patients withdrew; one from the control group kept forgetting and two from the garlic group experienced gastrointestinal discomfort. Tolerability was generally high, a quarter of the garlic group and 8% of the control group reported reflux and taste sensations which were easily subsided by splitting dosage to two times a day or taking the capsules with food. Majority (65%) of the sample preferred to take all capsules at the same time and 92% of the garlic group were willing to continue taking the capsules as long as they helped with blood pressure in comparison to 66% of the control
