In the book Under a War-Torn Sky by L.M Elliott the main character, Henry, is an American pilot who crashes during a mission in France. He has a well shaped character and is prepared for the hard times he has to face in war. Henry's preparation is due to his father Clayton's harsh attitude and teachings at the farm back home in Virginia. While Henry is stuck in France, he constantly hears his father's voice in his head encouraging him to go forward. This was a big factor in keeping Henry alive in many situations. Henry is also able to imitate his father's teachings and skills in order to encourage others or keep them safe. For example, Henry is able to use one of the skills his father taught him by making himself useful at camp by fixing old cars. His father's harsh teachings shaped Henry's character and prepared him for hard times. First of all, Clayton's voice was always inside of Henry's head. This usually happened when Henry was in trouble and wasn't quite sure what to do. During this time he would think back to what his father had told him as a kid. He would then use that old encouragement to help him make a decision about what he should do next. The next way Clayton had prepared Henry for war was how much he had taught him skill-wise. Henry was able to benefit others by offering this help to the ones that needed it during war. He also would usually get something in return, which benefits his own needs. The last big way that Clayton helped Henry was by shaping his character. Henry was tough, just like his father, and could help encourage others with the same intensity. This would persuade others to keep moving along in hard situations. Though some may say that Clayton's way of raising Henry was tough, it helped Henry a lot. Without that kind of teaching, Henry may not have survived the
