(BS-2) When Mada-Jan and Habib die, Najmah is lead to new experiences with Akhtar and Khalida that will help her survive. (BS-3) Najmah is one step closer to finding her family, and living a normal life when she meets Nusrat. (SIP-A) Before Najmah’s encounter with Akhtar and Khalida, she tried to comprehend her mother and brother’s death, which is the cause of her silence. (STEWE-1) Before she meets Akhtar and Khalida, Najmah is not sure how to handle, or what to make of her family's death. “I don’t care whether the Taliban fine me and kill me,”(Staples,83). Najmah is feeling that she has nothing left to live for, which causes her to give up on life. Right now, Najmah is feeling empty. (STEWE-2) Najmah is scarred from this experience, which leads her to not talking. She is silent, and will not communicate with anyone. “But I feel as if my tongue has been locked inside my mouth since the moment I saw my mother airing quilts just before the bombs fell,"(Staples,88). The death of her family is causing her silence. She feels that she cannot talk, because of the things she has seen. (SIP-B) Soon after the bombs, Najmah is rescued by Akhtar and Khalida who not only save her, but has treated her as one of her own. (STEWE-1) When trying to protect yourself during war, it is best to be dressed as a boy. Najmah is dressed as a boy, which means she will need to have the mentality of a boy. “I think about Akhtar's words. He is right. (SIP-A) When Najmah first meets Nusrat, she does not have faith in her capability to find her family, and she is not sure if this woman is worth trusting or not. (STEWE-1) When Najmah first sees Nusrat, her faith in her drops. She does not believe that this girl will do any good for her in finding her family. “...it's hard to imagine a small, weak yellow-haired foreigner would be able to help find Baba-Jan and Nur,”(Staples,199). She is not confident in her abilities to find her family. She does not feel that she will do anything to help the process of finding her family. After everything she has been through, she realizes that she cannot afford wasting her time on someone that might do her no good. (STEWE-2) Najmah does not trust easily. She has trained herself, and been taught that strangers are more then likely the enemy. “Her kindness is difficult to accept after learned not to trust anyone these last few weeks,”(Staples,199). Her experiences have lead her to feel that others are not trustworthy. She has been trained to assume that others are not worth trusting. Consequently, she cannot trust Nusrat that easily. (SIP-B) Now that Najmah has been around Nusrat for quite some time, she realizes that she is worth trusting, and that she will do her some good in finding her family. (STEWE-1) Najmahs Uncle comes looking for her, and
