Underneath the mustache The people of Oceania in the novel 1984, are being brainwashed by the government (Big Brother) into believing lies. They are able to accept these lies as the truth because they have never been told any different so therefore, it’s set within their minds that it is the truth. Big Brother and the Party have complete control over their citizens, their history, and even their language. They distributed everything, food, comforts and vice, like cigarettes. The Party is forcing the implementation of their language called Newspeak. This language attempts to prevent political rebellion by eliminating all words related to it. Even thinking rebellious thoughts is illegal. Such thoughtcrime is, in fact, the worst of all crimes. The people of Oceania are being told lies that they think are true. “Even from the coins the eyes pursued you” (Orwell 27). By seeing these phrases everywhere, people would start to believe that they are true. The government is lying to the people. “The face gazed up at him, heavy, calm, protecting, but what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark mustache” (Orwell 104)? They don’t know that it is not the right thing because they don’t know any better. Once you see or read things over and over again it starts to set in your mind, basically like your memorizing it. “Then the face of Big Brother faded away again, and instead the three slogans of the Party stood out in bold capitals: WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH (Orwell 16).” You would think that the people would know that these three phrases are definitely not what is right.
