Understanding the Causes of Social Issues in Canada
Each year, United Ways and Centraides raise upwards of $480 million, the majority of which is reinvested in local communities to support programs and services (“United Way”). According to the article, “United Way Mission”, it explains how the United Way helps neighboring communities that need financial and emotional support. The article explains how community's volunteer and financial resources are mobilized to meet urgent human needs and improve social life of every one. It goes on to explain that by more than 200,000 volunteers, United Ways and Centraides are improving the lives of individuals in their community. Next the article mentions that volunteers create resources by sitting on United Way-Centraide boards, local fundraising, and help out in other ability. Finally, each year the United Way works with the government and communities to fight against poverty, help homelessness, and families or individuals in crisis or need (“United Way”). In order to understand some of the social problems that people face in Canada is to identify the causes of those systemic issues such as lack of education, family relationship issue and newcomer’s assimilation into Canadian culture. To begin with, lack of education could lead systemic social issue. First, for financial reason people leave school. People in poverty need to earn money to support family. They do not have time to go to school. For example, a child of 16 year old works with minimum wages, instead of going school, to support family. For example, a bullied child may think, school is only for stronger children. Third, people with special need may not go to school because of limited accessibility. Not all the special need people have same condition. A blind person’s need or a deaf persons need or need of a person with limited mobility is different (According to “Canadian literacy and learning network”). In a broken, divorced family, where children live only with one parent, misses the complete family structure and the stability they need. For example, when a divorced mother lives with her only son, the son misses his father and complete family structure. Third, violence is another cause of family issue. Family violence is physical, emotional or financial abuse to a family member. But it affects the whole family. Family violence may lead to injury (According to “Statistics Canada”). For example, one family member may control the financial resources, including victims earning, and not giving money to victim. In the end, family issue can be caused by poverty, divorce and family violence.
Furthermore, new comers in Canada face social issues when they decide to assimilate into Canadian society. It causes by
