Unemployment Insurance as a policy promotes social justice by making sure that people who are out of a job for reasons other than misbehavior can receive some income. Social justice can be defined as, “…when all people share a common humanity and thereofre have a right to equitable treatment…and a fair allocation of community resources: (Robinson 1). In this case, income is the unequal resource. This goal promotes a higher quality of life for the previously employed, but now unemployed (bad wording here, but this is the only way I could think of to phrase it). The policy is likely to accomplish its goals, and it’ll help people become motivated to find a job because of the 26-week limit. It only reaches out to people that used to be employed and are not anymore, and are therefore struggling financially. Although this population is definitely in need of help, there are so many other populations that do as well. Some people work minimum wage jobs and still live at or below the poverty line. In addition, there are also special groups, such as single parents and immigrants, who have special financial problems to worry about. To most people, asking for financial help means that they’re inferior to those that do not need financial help. Furthermore, people who need financial assistance usually don’t want other people to know that they are having trouble meeting their financial needs. According to the CBS newstation website, the funding for this policy comes from taxes that employers pay. Specifically, the taxes are taken out of each employee’s paycheck. In my opinion, there are both good and bad sides to this. Obviously the good side is that the money goes towards helping the unemployed, but the bad part is that needed funds are taken out of peoples’ paychecks.
