IT-431 Milestone Two
Network
Each bookstore will have a small local area network (LAN). Each LAN will connect to the remote server though the internet via a virtual private network (VPN). This type of network will allow the computers within each bookstore to connect to each other, but not the computers in the other bookstores. The VPNs will allow all of the bookstore to access and update inventory information stored on the server.
This network configuration is a good option because the bookstores will be distributed across New England and so connecting them directly is not feasible. Also the computers in different bookstores do not need to be connected as the only resources they need to share will be hosted on the central server. Using VPNs to connect to the

This can include password protection on all of the bookstore computers as well as requiring usernames and passwords to use the VPN to connect to the central server. Preventing unauthorized access can also be done by having physical security measures such as not having the bookstore computers in a place customers can access them as well as having the server in a secure place.
To protect data encryption should be used. All of the data on the data server should be encrypted so that even if someone were to gain access to the server and the data on it, they would not be able to view the data. Any data in transit also needs to be protected, but this is accomplished by using a VPN as any transmitted information is encrypted.
