Unemployment is defined as a situation where someone of working age is not able to get a job but would like to be in full time employment. One grey area is voluntary unemployment. This occurs when the unemployed choose not to take a job at the going wage rate (e.g. wrong job, benefits too high etc.) They could be counted as unemployed because they are still seeking a job (they just don’t want to take one they are offered). There are four main types of unemployment, Frictional, Cyclical, Structural and Season unemployment. Frictional unemployment is when people take time to find a job, it might be because they’re deciding between different many job offers or if they are waiting to find a job that is right for them. It also can be the time it takes for the organisations to interview the potential applicants for the job and which individual they decide to employ. Frictional unemployment comes under the voluntary unemployment category because it is the time needed to place job seekers to the job vacancies. An example of this is a person voluntarily quitting their job and taking time out trying to find another job. (Source: Ehow, 2015)

For example, law schools in the United States trained more lawyers than the country needed, which can make it difficult for a lawyer to gain a job as a lawyer. A lawyer then might be able to gain a job working in a sector like retail, but may decline the job as it not the line of work he was trained for. Structural unemployment may also be caused by geographical problems. For example, people who are prepared to do construction work might live in a rural area, but the construction jobs are only available in built-up areas. (Source: Ehow,
