Unit 4: Culminating Task – 1945-1982
Task: Create a thesis statement for your subject before starting your research. For your essay outline, you will need a 3 sub-thesis argument with historical evidence to support each argument.

For each sub-thesis argument, you will record figures, historical facts, key figures, statistics, etc. In addition, you must use two methods when recording your research – paraphrasing and direct quotes. Direct quotes are used for short sentences that are profound and have a big impact. Paraphrasing is used for big ideas or to summarize essential information.

-The official language act was passed in 1969
-Canadian law that gives English and French equality in the government
-Attempt to make English and French speaking Canadians happy
-Official languages of Canada, unified the country as one
-Quebec was mostly French speaking and the act helped bring the country together
-Also gave “Quebecers” a sense of equality in Canada
October Crisis
-Happened during October 1970 in Quebec, Canada
-The kidnapping and murder of Pierre Laporte and kidnapping of James Cross
-The members responsible were the Front de libération du Québec, also known as the FLQ
-Pierre Trudeau used the War Measures Act, and it was the only time it had been used during a time of peace(ex: other times were world war 1 and world war 2)
-Was supported by others to make this decision
-Police had more power and were able to arrest 497 people
-Only 62 were charged while the rest were let go free of charge

End of October Crisis
-Used war measurement act
-On October 15th the government asked for help from Canadian Armed Forces to help along with the local police
-Many were arrested and detained without charge
-Over 450 people were detained in Quebec but most of the them were released without any charges
Aftermath
-On October 16 they found the dead body of Pierre Laporte
-James cross was discovered in a holding cell during early December
-Members were found and to be tried for kidnapping and murder
-Paul Rose and Francis Simard received life sentences in prison for the death of Laporte
-The response using the War measures act was controversial
