5a. When comparing a public organization such as the Department of Defense (DoD) and a stakeholder invested company such as Southern California Edison (SCE); there are similarities in organizational structure. Southern California Edison is hierarchical in nature, with the CEO managing approximately a dozen vice presidents, VPs overseeing countless directors, directors supervising tens of M3s, M3s managing M2s, and so on. This parallels the DoD in their management structure with the Secretary of Defense on top, Deputy Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Military Departments, Office of the Secretary, and multiple levels beyond that down to the majors and generals. With these levels of management, a strict chain of commands must be followed in both organizations. Another similarity between SCE and the DoD is the management in increased prevention of waste and spending. Both organizations have implemented a guide on travel regulations that are enterprise-wide, including approval levels and stronger requirements on cost estimates for hosted events. When Layoffs are higher than ever and the need to cutback is vital, both public and private industries are exploring and implementing numerous bench market standards within their own organizations.
