Compare-and-Contrast Essay

The two stories, ‘Up the Slide’ and ‘A Glow in the Darkness’, were well written and had a lot of vivid and specific descriptions that lets you imagine every aspect of the plot, the setting and climate mentioned in the story. Both stories talk about characters facing hardships, confusions or are in strange situations.

The similarities between the two stories are the topic which is characters facing hardships and the role of the dogs which is being sled dogs. The differences between the two stories are a lot such as the genre of the two works. ‘Up the Slide’ is realistic fiction with a lot of realistic details and descriptions of things. but ‘A Glow in the Darkness’ is a nonfiction story with vivid details. Another difference is In the story ‘Up the Slide’, the author used a lot of sensory details and descriptions that helps us imagine the story and the type of climate and conditions the main character which is Clay experiences. His fear increased when the dogs started singing the death song which they only sang once in their life with Gary. There is proof in the passage that he was frightened from the dogs’ death song: “Rain songs and first-snow and meat songs and come-back-and-stay-with-us songs and even puppy training songs, but I heard this song only once, when an old dog had died in the kennel. It was a death song. And that frightened me”. There is also a quotation that he was scared from the glow: “Ghosts and goblins and dark nights and snakes under the bed and sounds I didn’t know and bodies I had found and grave yards under covered pale moons and death, death, death…..”.
