The Jungle was written to expose issues. One of the main problems were the working conditions in the meat-packing industry. Sinclair’s described it as being full of diseased, and contaminated meat, which stunned the public and led to new federal food safety laws. There were also matters of poor wage and safety. Although the people weren’t worried about it because they weren’t in that position of occupation. Prior before the change of the century, a major reform movement had emerged in the United States, known as progressives. The reformers were reacting to problems caused by the rapid growth of factories and cities. Progressives at first concentrated on improving the lives of those living in poor areas and in getting rid of corruption in government.
