My grandmother is a wise woman and has taught all her grandchildren many good life lessons. One of the things she used to say to us when we were feeling sorry for ourselves or thought life was not fair was “Most of people’s problems come from the way people respond to life, not from the way life is.” I thought of this saying and others lesson from her as I read through the book, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. Another lesson she taught us was, “Do not be naïve enough to trust people you do now know,” She would say, “Do not trust people just because you could be trusted in the same situation or because you would follow the Golden Rule.” Get to know people before you trust them. Make wise decisions about who you trust. If everybody followed the Golden Rule and treated others as they would want to be treated then Jurgis and his family would have had a whole different story, but that is not how life is. I think Jurgis could have benefitted from having a wiser, older person in his life to teach him these life lessons. He had a father and Ona’s step-mother, but they did not seem to be a wise counsel for him. Jurgis made several responses to life that were poor decisions that brought on huge problems for him and his family starting off with his decision to have a huge wedding celebration in a new country without knowing how it would get paid for and poor decisions and poor responses just continued
