Vance Joy’s well-known indie love song, Georgia, is one of this century’s understated great love songs.Written in the midst of an artistic dry spell on New Years Eve 2014, Vance Joy, born James Keogh, has proclaimed it to be one of his personal favourite songs. The song was originally written as a homage to Ray Charles’ Georgia on my Mind; Vance Joy describes his infatuation in a similar way to Charles. Georgia describes a passionate love between two people who developed feelings at different rates to each other. It explore the idea of women’s sexual power over men and the concept of unrequited and lost love. He describes her as striking yet beautiful, giving him feelings of passion and lust. The choice of lyrics makes it clear from the first instance, Keogh was particularly taken by not only her physical appearance, but the way she made him feel. The first two lines of the song are the only example of rhyme within the song, rhyming “She is something to behold” with “Elegant and bold”. The third line again is the song’s only use of assonance, with the repetition of the ‘e’ sound within “She” and “electricity”.
