Variicella Zoster Virus: A Case Study

Varicella is a contagious illness that is caused by a zoster virus. This disease is part of herpesviruses that can affect an individual in multiply ways. Once someone is already exposed to the varicella zoster virus it remains present in ones sensory nerves , that later in life can cause some complications. Although varicella, also known as chickenpox, was a common childhood disease, it is now more commonly found in elderly– better know as shingle.

The first introduction of varicella in a person starts with a great deal of pain that is accompanied by an itchy sensation. That pain is then followed by a rash. According to Ogle, (2012, p 29). “Red patches appear on the skin on one side of the body, followed by vesicles filled with clear serum. These vesicles, or blisters, are clusters and may become purulent before they rupture and form a crust .” These blisters form in various parts of the human body that involve the mucous membrane. “Such as the inside of the mouth, nose, throat, and vagina.” (Anon,2013, para 2) Following signs and symptoms of this disease are fever, headaches, abdominal pain, joint pain, restlessness and headaches. These signs and symptoms can be present one to three weeks prior to the disease and can last about another two to three during the illness.

Coming in contact with the fluid that fills the blisters or even inhaling the droplets from an infected person, can make a person immune to the disease. Another way of coming in contact with varicella is person to person. For example: if someone is around a person who has varicella and has never had chicken pox before or has gotten vaccinated, they can be at high risk to the exposer of this
