People in life-or-death situations shouldn't be held accountable for their actions.Mainly because they are acting on instinct and survival knowledge and they are only thinking of themselves and of how to get out of that situation. Others may say they should be held responsible for their actions because they may have been able to think of something, even though they have never gotten into such a situation and no one really knows how they will act until they are put into that setting. Sometimes people want to survive so badly they need to go against their moral code or even how they were raised. For instance in the excerpt from Life of Pi the main character, Pi had to kill fish even though being a vegetarian all of his life, “ a lifetime of peaceful vegetarianism stood between me and the willful beheading of a fish” He had to go against his ethics for a chance to survive, and as a result he felt at fault after killing the fish, “I was now as guilty as Cain.” Some may say that these people in their situations could’ve done something different. Even though we can’t know this for sure because they may have been thinking of something different, such as wanting a meal before calling for help or the other way around.
