Vermont is known for liberalism, but similar to many aspects of the state, it is an element that has only recently developed. Vermont was principally conservative for about a century, but this began to shift in the 1960s. There was a rapid increase in population as many people moved north from larger cities such as Boston and New York. These people were attracted to more rural areas and self-divided based on their political leanings. New Hampshire called to the more conservative folks by advertising lower taxes and the “Live Free or Die” motto, while Vermont attracted younger, liberal, outdoorsy yuppies.
