Veterans Day is a day that is very important and significant to our country. Many people just think of it as a day off of school or work, but what people should really think about it as a day to honor and praise those who serve and protect our country. Most people don’t know the basic history. Veterans Day all started in 1919. Veterans Day is different for everyone and to me it means more than just honoring all Veterans. How did Veterans Day become “Veterans Day”? After WWI Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day in honor of ceased fire. In 1918 Armistice Day was celebrated at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. President Gerald R. Ford understood how extremely special this day is, so he reserved this day as a historical day and is permanently reserved for November 11th. We get a day off of work and school to honor the Veterans. This is called a “Uniform Holiday”. Then in 1954 President Eisenhower changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans day. The word honor is a perfect way to describe Veterans Day. I think that word is important, but there are also many other words like appreciate, respect, and thankful. I appreciate the men and women that serve our country because they let us live in a free country every day. To me the word respect really stands out to me. What they do for our country is more than I could ever imagine someone doing. The last word is thankful. I think everyone including me at Byron Middle School is so thankful for all the Veterans do. There is nothing that can amount to what they do. Veterans day is not only about honoring the Veterans, but understanding and learning a little about what they do. The history is very important.
