In the state of Indiana there are a lot of laws and regulations a veterinary technician must know and understand. As well as other states if the veterinary technician wants to practice in a different state. These laws and regulations help set the boundaries of what a veterinary technician can and can’t legally do. The laws and regulations also help the state lessen the abuse of animals by humans. For a veterinary technician to become licensed they must first attain a 2 year associate’s degree in veterinary technology and then pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). The education required to attain an associate degree in veterinary technology is not something you can learn without experience. Immediate supervision is when the veterinarian is within direct eyesight and hearing range. Direct supervision is when a veterinarian is present when supervising the veterinary technician. When the veterinarian is not present and gives the veterinary technician instructions it is called indirect supervision. A task that a veterinary technician would not be legally able to perform is surgery. However under the supervision of a veterinarian a technician can legally preform a surgery. As a veterinary technician there are some tasks that a technician is not legally able to perform. Prescribing, diagnosing, prognosing, and perform surgery are the tasks that can only be performed by a licensed veterinarian. Prescribing medication is when a veterinarian give a prescription for medication that can only be dispensed by a pharmacy. Diagnosing is identifying the cause of the problem as prognsing is a forecast of the probable course of the problem.
