Vibia Perpetua, a young Christian girl, was martyred in Carthage in the Roman Empire about 1,820 years ago. The account of her martyrdom is still alive to this day, and her story, which is told all over the world, is an inspiration to Christians, especially those facing persecution. According to Open Doors, more than 365 million Christians today are suffering high levels of discrimination and persecution for their faith. These Christians may look to stories like Perpetua’s. Christians also faced persecution back in Perpetua’s time, which was in the Roman Empire. Despite the prosecution, no matter what Perpetua faced in her life, she was steadfast in her faith. Before she is killed, her father comes to her to beg her to deny her faith so that she can come home– so that she can pity his gray hair. Perpetua points at a vase, and she asks her father if the vase can be called by any other name.
