Parrot in the Oven by Victor Martinez is about a boy named Manny growing up. At the beginning of the book, Manny is a “parrot in the oven.” This metaphor is about a parrot complaining about the heat in the shade when he’s really standing in an oven. The metaphor is used to describe someone that is ignorant. By the end of the book, Manny is no longer an ignorant child. Victor Martinez’s Parrot in the Oven is a Bildungsroman, a coming of age novel where the main character learns a valuable life lesson, because through Manny’s dad almost killing Manny’s mom, Magda having a miscarriage, and Manny joining a gang, Manny realizes what kind of person he wants to be and therefore, grows up.
Manny learns a lesson through Manny’s dad almost killing Manny’s mom, which is the first step of him growing up. Manny’s father was upset that his wife embarrassed him at Rico’s. He comes home and fines out his wife is at Sophie’s. He thinks that means she’s going to leave him, when she was really getting her hair done. So he grabbed his gun and started tearing apart the house looking for bullets while Manny is putting stuff back. Pedi finds some bullets and gives them to their father. When Manny’s father almost tries to kill Manny’s mother, he established that he can’t do anything to fix his family, which is falling apart in front of his eyes. When Magda had her miscarriage, he experienced racism from the nurse, who was the same race as him. When Manny joined the gang, he was given a second chance and realized that he doesn’t want to end up like Eddie; getting people regnant and ending up in a gang which will get him
