The 1960s is known as one of the “fashion alert” times in history. This era marked the beginning of many new trends. One famous trend was the mini skirt by Mary Quant. Another big hit was Vidal Sassoon’s collection of unique hairstyles. Finally, the beehive by Margaret Vinci Heldt was a popular hairdo.

To begin with, the mini skirt was a fashionable style in the 60s. This invention changed many fashion traditions. It gave women more fashion rights! “The young people of the 60’s were sick and tired of the old rules and the conservative society. They wanted something new, and this was the decade of optimism” (Fashion in the 1960s). For example, women showed more skin than they used to. The mini skirt was six to seven inches above the knee. It was most popular between 1966 and 1967. “It looked simple, neat, clean cut, and young” (Thomas).

Three of his most famous hairstyles were the five point, asymmetrical bob, and the quiff. The five point had five clean cut points, one in the bangs, two on the side, and two in the back (“Iconic Hairstyles from Vidal Sassoon”). The asymmetrical bob is a simple, flowing and angled cut. “The quiff is more of a boyish style that involves cutting the hair short and trimming the bangs that frames the face and sometimes descends over one eye” (“Iconic Hairstyles from Vidal Sassoon”).

Lastly, the beehive was invented by Margaret Vinci Heldt in 1960. “This hairstyle resembled the shape of a traditional beehive. Long hair was piled up in a cone like shape on the top of the head slightly pointing backwards” (Beehive (hairstyle)). Famous American actress Christina Hendricks, late English singer Amy Winehouse, and comic-character Marge Simpson are three celebrities that are commonly seen with beehives
