In 1965, the United States of America went to war with Vietnam. The war was started when an American man monitoring a ship’s radar made a mistake. When a hailstorm came, the man thought it was the enemy attacking and sounded an alarm, causing America to initiate a war. The United States had a purpose in going to Vietnam, which was to stop Communism from spreading. Because they went to Vietnam, the United States was impacted both positively and negatively. The war even affected America’s foreign policy. The USA went to Vietnam in order to stop the spread of Communism. In 1965, Lyndon B. Johnson said, “We have helped to build, we have helped to defend. The photograph titled “‘Little Saigon’ in Westminster, California” shows Vietnamese shops and other businesses. (Doc 6). Due to the war, Vietnamese immigrants added their culture to the United States in the form of businesses and shops, and contributed to the workforce which helped the United States’ economy. “More than 80 colleges closed their doors yesterday for periods ranging from a day to the remainder of the academic year as thousands of students joined the growing nationwide campus protest against the war in Southeast Asia.” (Doc 5b). Because of the Vietnam War, American college students were spending their days protesting rather than learning, and colleges were closed down.
