The Vietnam War affected the United States in a variety of ways. These can be categorized into political, economic, and social effects. These categories overlap, and affect each other, causing even more change. The changes in the US economy during the Johnson administration, between 1964 and 1968, were mostly due to the Vietnam War.The Vietnam war started before the Johnson administration in 1955 and lasted well past his administration until 1975. During the war, Congress imposed a war tax in addition to the high inflation that the war was causing. The Vietnam War was very expensive for the US because South Vietnam did not have the resources that they needed to fight and relied on the US for aid. The US was already having economic problems before the Vietnam War started because of the Cold War. During the presidential campaign of 1964 George Wallace ran as a third party candidate as a segregationist alabama governor. Some of the most noticeable political changes were found in Congress. These changes were economical as well as social. One of these social changes was the emergence of a political party focused on polarizing the developments of their time. Many of these changes went against what President Johnson and his administration wanted, which was to do whatever it would take to stop the spread of Communism. The administration had not changed its views along with the people, who were tired of fighting. When the administration finally realized this and tried to change, it was too late and a new administration was elected. While there were many effects that the Vietnam War had on the United States between 1964 and 1968 it is hard to separate them because they are all so closely related and were all effects of each other as well as the
