Magic Always Comes With a Price
When I was young my father was branded a coward, making me want even more to make something of myself. I left to fight in the Ogre War to prove to everyone from home that I was not the coward they thought I was. While I was there I was assigned to guard a prisoner, she who stated my wife was pregnant and that my actions in the war would leave my son fatherless. Even though I was skeptical at first, I intentionally injured myself so I could be with my son. My wife was disgusted by my cowardness and thought that our son Baelfire would have been better off if I had died in the Ogre War. She began to gamble and run around with the wrong people. One inperticular was Killian Jones, who in time kidnapped her and took her prisoner. I tried getting her back but because of my cowardness I couldn’t draw my sword to Jones and I lost her.
I returned home feeling like the coward everyone thought I was and told Baelfire that his mother was gone. We lived our lives as normally as possible until our kingdom restorted to using the young children from ages 12 and up to fight in another Ogre War. That was when my son and I left for the woods running from the chance that he would be called to war. While in the woods we came upon a strange old man who offers us help in exchange for some company and food. He listened to our story without saying anything. The old man knew we couldn’t run forever so he offered us an idea on how to get the dagger that would control the Dark One. After I plotted the idea, I went to the Dukes Castle and stole the dagger. There was a name upon the dagger that said Zoso. Zoso appeared and threatened my son, and although I was afraid and cowardly I stabbed him. As he died, he whispered in my ear “Magic Always Comes with a Price.” With that the dagger started to change making the name on it now my own “Rumplestiltskin”.
Once I killed the Dark One with his dagger the magic transferred from him to me, making me have more power than I could ever think of having I brought the war to an end. Using the new found magic I had for good things it brought me respect and honor, something I’d always dreamed of having. The power came with drawbacks, though I was always seeking more power and that hurt and destroyed people. The people became fearful of me and that lead me to becoming the most powerful and wealthy individual in the kingdom. My son hated the magic and I knew the only thing I could do was to have someone kill me with my magical dagger. He didn’t want to lose me too, so he made a plan to get us both out of the kingdom safe and magic free. Baelfire found the Blue Fairy and she offered him a magic bean that would transport us into a place, safe without me having to die to lose my power.
When the time came to plant the magic bean, I reverted into my former personality. I didn’t want to give up my power. I clung to the edge of the portal with my dagger and abandoned my son in the process. His last word to me was “coward,” and I broke the only deal I ever cared about by sacrificing power over my own son. As soon as he was gone I regretted all that I had done since I was given the magic of the Dark One. I tried to summon the Blue Fairy but she said it was impossible to get him back, but I tricked her into revealing that a powerful curse would allow me to be with my son again. I swore to her that I would stop at nothing to have my son Balefire back and acknowledged that I had “all the time in the world” to figure out how.
Later when I met a mysterious man in a bar he told me he could get a magical bean that would take me to another world, so I agree and promise the man eternal life in exchange. Before I left the bar, I noticed Killian Jones, the kidnapper and his crew. I wait to follow them out into the alley outside the bar, where they proceed to mock me. Once I revealed myself as the Dark One, Jones challenge me to finish out our duel,
