The Vista Ranch and Cellar Winery, established in 2010, is located in Merced, California and founded by two women who had a passion for throwing parties. The pair were the matriarchs of their kindred with other successful family businesses in the area. The Marchinis were agriculturists and the DeJagers were dairy farmers, both leading ladies were good friends. However, Mrs. DeJager felt the need to focus on her family’s dairy farming company, so Mrs. Marchini felt it necessary to keep the business running. Different divisions of labor emerge from each general department, but like many small businesses the work specializations are more cross-functional. The administrative section of this organization consists of two to three individuals who carry out scheduling of employees, billing, human resource duties, event planning, marketing, sales, hiring, and event coordinating. For the execution of events there are designated individuals assigned to be setup crew, linens persons, servers, bussers, bartenders, kitchen staff, event leads, event coordinators, clean-up crew and so on. That individual is the manager and daughter-in-law of the owner. The Vista’s manager has a wide span of control considering that she is in charge of all general departments and their functions.
Centralization is basically determining that a business utilizes a specific individual to make the large decisions that must be made. As a result of the Vista’s manager administering duties to be executed by lower supervisors, its viable to depict that the small business has centralized characteristics within their structure with a very wide span of control.
Overall, the Vista Ranch and Cellars Winery has exhibited low formalization within their company’s structure. By the cause of the Vista manager’s centralized role in large decision-making processes, the lower level employees must be given a task. The business’s environment and events are all very different.
