Vladek and Guido were similar in many ways because they both were very witty and cunning and they did many things for the sake of their family. One way that Vladek and Guido were similar is that they were very quick on their feet. One example in the movie, “Life Is Beautiful”, is when Guido volunteered to translate what the Nazi soldier said, so that his story about the Holocaust being a game would seem more credible to his son, Giosue. If Guido had not thought so quickly about how he was going to convince his son, then someone else might have volunteered, and then his son would have been too scared to follow any of Guido’s rules, that ultimately kept Giosue safe. Furthermore, an example in “Maus 1, My Father Bleeds History” that shows that Vladek was just as a quick thinker as Guido was when the german children accused him of being a jew, instead of fleeing from the scene that could have caused the Gestapo to come, he remained calm as to think nothing of the children's accusation. While Vladek was more serious and in order to keep the ones around him happy, he often just kept many secrets at a time and did not share them with Anja. Another big difference is that Vladek had the advantages of being a rich jew. Vladek could buy himself safety, shelter, and food, while Guido wasn’t rich at all, he had worked at the hotel with his uncle Eliseo and when he married Dora they opened a book shop. Guido could not pay the Nazi soldiers to look the other way, or pay anyone to help them escape. He had to use pure intelligence and wits to help his family. Vladek and Guido had their similar and different character traits, but ultimately their goal was to keep their loved ones
