Vladek’s failed relationships with women paint a picture throughout the story’s timeline and provide insight to his personality. Lucia Greenberg, Anja (Zylberberg) Spiegelman, and Mala Spiegelman although very different personalities ultimately all experience a painful ending in the time spent with Vladek. Vladek failed relationships are characterized by many factors and are not associated with a common trait in the women.
The first woman in Vladek’s life was Lucia Greenberg obsessive and protective of Vladek. This relationship took place before the Holocaust. Lucia always insisted on visiting his apartment and consistently asked him when they were getting engaged. Lucia said: “Let’s get engaged, Vladek.” Vladek responds : “It’s late. He remarked“….I didn’t want to be more closer with her, but she really wouldn’t let me go.” (14) When he finally left her it was because her family had no money. Next, is Anja Zylberberg who became Vladek’s first wife. He was originally attracted to Anja because of her wealth, neatness, intelligence, and fluency in languages. “Everything is neat and straight just the way I like it!” (19) Personally, what I found important in their relationship was that Vladek eventually loved her although the initial attraction was money and the downfall to Lucia had the wealth component.
