Vladek’s failed relationships with women paint a picture throughout the story’s timeline and provide insight into his personality. Lucia Greenberg, Anja (Zylberberg) Spiegelman, and Mala Spiegelman although very different personalities ultimately all experience a painful ending in the time spent with Vladek. Vladek failed relationships are characterized by many factors and are not associated with a common trait in the women. The first woman in Vladek’s life was Lucia Greenberg obsessive and protective of Vladek. This relationship took place before the Holocaust. Lucia always insisted on visiting his apartment and consistently asked him when they were getting engaged. Lucia said: “Let’s get engaged, Vladek.” Vladek responds : “It’s late. I’ll take you home.” (15) It is evident that Vladek involvement did not include love. He is paranoid believes his wife will steal from him. “take everything out from the safe.. or Mala will grab it.” (126) Vladek and Mala would constantly argue over his will. “Three times she already change over my will.” (127) He is vocal regarding the regret of his second marriage. He remarked to his son “Why Artie? Why I ever remarried?” (127) “Mala makes me crazy.” (67) Mala flees to Florida to escape the oppressive household with Vladek. You feel the need to support Mala when you discover the erratic behavior that she put up with from Vladek. Vladek’s multiple relationships important because they each show a different side of the character with women before, during, and after the war. A common theme for Vladek appears to be wealth, even with Anja. It is obvious he had unsuccessful relationships. You might conclude that Vladek and people like him are the reason for commenting like money can’t buy
