One of the most controversial people of the 18th century was also a French philosopher and writer, known today by the pen name of Voltaire. He is also classified under the linear camp. Voltaire’s main view of history can be described as, “History has no end but will keep progressing toward better and better situations” (Marsh “Looking at History”). In his argument, Voltaire discards God and insists that nothing is directed by God’s hand, and history is nothing more than progress through humanity’s will. This viewpoint allows for no end of history or a true overarching purpose for history, or humanity for that matter.
