I had an opportunity to volunteer for a period of three days. This was my volunteering activity as a requirement for my class. I had never really volunteered before in a different country apart from my country Uganda. Identifying Campus kitchen was a very challenging opportunity for me since I was required to volunteer in place around campus. The main reason for this was financial constraints, I have no private means of transport to take me to nursing home and more importantly, I needed to volunteer in place which did not require any background check up. I was able to sign up for three different days because I wanted to get more time for my volunteering opportunity. Though the main aim for me to sign up for this volunteering opportunity was a requirement for my class but I also used it as an opportunity to count towards my cultural contribution scholarship. As an international student for me to maintain my scholarship, I also have to volunteer in any campus events or organization. After signing up I waited for three days to scheduled time for work. Then, on receiving an acceptance through my email. I was able to start my volunteering project with Campus Kitchen. Signing up did not require to have any background checks since campus kitchen is part of Minnesota state university Mankato project through student Engagement office under student activities office. She also told me to help with cleaning dishes so that we do not have to wait long after work. So while others started to pack food, I also was started cleaning all the emptied utensils. This was a great opportunity for me to learn how to clean and disinfect the utensils in a proper recommended way. In my culture, it’s very hard for men to work in dish room cleaning but a purposes of learning, this was a great opportunity for me to do it in a right professional way. Breaking the cultural norms requires courage which is needed in nursing professional. People used to think that nursing is meant for ladies but all these beliefs have come to past that we are getting into the professional of caring for others. I emptied the sink and meant sure that it’s clean and dry. At the end my first day of volunteering, we had to clean up and organize the kitchen area, then we all signed out. This marked the end of my first day of work.
Tuesday was my second day of work, we had a different group of student volunteers come in along with me, and we washed our hands, dressed up on apron and covered our hair. This is all a requirement for people working with food preparation. Tuesday is a day of food recovery and delivery. So we were very few people were some people went on to get food from donors who include Red lobster, Olive garden, Chipotle, Panera, and Dickeys. These are some
