Volver is a capturing film that examines a vivid story that melodramatically focuses on women’s roles, love, betrayals, and family. This film also examines the interaction between cinema and different aspects of Spanish cultural and social heritage. The word “Volver” means to return, to come back, which is represented throughout this film. The film begins with a group of women returning to a cemetery as they were cleaning the graves of their loved ones. Throughout this film, there is a constant theme of loved ones returning and dying. Almodovar developed a unique style for this movie. This movie centralizes women’s role and the problems they face in a “man’s world.” The main character, Raimunda, is a strong and hard workingwoman. She struggles throughout this movie from the role of being a wife, mother, lover, and trying to pursue her career. Volver presents a narrative that involves murder, incest/sexual abuse, and death. This movie was taken place in a village in La Mancha the rural part of Spain, where Raimunda and her family lives. Castille-La Mancha is one of three autonomous communities surrounding Madrid. La Mancha is famous for the story of Don Quixote, which was written by Cervantes at the beginning of the seventeenth century, and was the most important character in Spanish literature. With that being said, this novel is important for contemporary postmodern and post- structuralism concepts.
