Voting Turnout In America

From the moment that America was created, people wanted to have a say in government. People can participate in government by not only voting, but by running for public office, getting involved with local parties, and contributing money to campaigns. Across the country, state governments give people many people the opportunity to participate in government and influence progress. Though this opportunity is given, many people are choosing not to vote or even concern themselves with politics. Socioeconomic statuses such as race, ethnicity, age, health, education, region, and gender are factors that influence the voting turnout across the U.S. Some don’t vote because of reasons such as registration requirements, lack of information, and lack of competition. The history of voting in America has shaped who and how people vote, and as time passes we see how voter turnout has fluctuated over the U.S as a whole and in our home state of Louisiana.

Though people are living in America under the supervision of the government, some don’t concern themselves with politics. This is a choice that people make and they make the decision to accept what happens. Competition is also a problem, because sometimes there are candidates who have no real plan and instead of talking about what they will do to benefit America, they bash those running against them. Lack of education is also a factor that has to be considered. If people are not taught about participating in government and are taught how to be a productive citizen, they can’t be expected to participate. Negative campaigns goes back to the bashing of opponents and having not discerning themselves on how they are going to make changes. People who are disaffected, believe that they have no real say in politics and their vote really does not
