The definition of suspense is “A state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen.” Three techniques the author uses to create suspense are setting, ambiguity, and point of view.
Many authors use setting to create suspense. Edgar Allen Poe and W.W Jacobs use dark setting to create suspense, this is shown when W.W Jacobs says “Without the night was cold and wet”(Jacobs 105). This is an example of the dark setting that authors use to create suspense. And Poe states his setting when he says “His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness…”(Poe 90). He used this quote to create a scary setting when he was going into the old man's room. Setting makes the reading feel like they are in this scary place and makes the book more exciting and
