Jim’s intellectual abilities were measured using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV). The WAIS-IV consists of five indexes, which include Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI), Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI), Working Memory Index (WMI), and Processing Speed Index (PSI). Jim’s cognitive ability is within the High Range as indicted by the Full Scale IQ (FSIQ). However, despite scoring on the High Range, there are notable weaknesses within subtests. Jim scored in the Superior Range in the VCI, which measure verbal reasoning and concept formation. Jim’s Superior Range placed him at the 91st percentile. Jim scored on the Superior Range on the subtests that measured lexical knowledge and general information for Vocabulary …show more content…
He scored on the High Range for Matrix Reasoning, which measured his ability to perform non-verbal abstract problem solving, inductive reasoning, and spatial reasoning tasks. Jim’s personal strength was demonstrated by the score in the Superior Range for Visual Puzzle. The subtest Visual Puzzle measures the ability to analyze and synthesize visual stimuli. Jim’s scored were scattered in the Visual Puzzle subtest which indicates that he missed earlier easier items and then successfully completed later difficult items. As a result, this subtest is an underestimate of Jim’s ability in this area. Jim scored Within Normal Limits/Average Range on the subtest requiring visual and motor task, Block Design, and Figure Weights, which measure quantitative and analogical reasoning. In contrast to Jim’s High to Average Range on the subtests in the PCI, Jim’s personal weakness was demonstrated in the subtest Picture Completion, which measures visual perception and organization. Jim’s score of Borderline placed him at the 5th percentile …show more content…
Jim scored within the Average Range in the WMI. Jim also scored on the Average Range on the following subtests, Digit Span, Arithmetic, and Letter-Number Sequencing. The subtest Digit Span is a verbal and auditory task that measures short-term auditory memory. Letter-Number Sequencing measures short-term memory, attention, and the ability to manipulate/reorder information in short term memory. Lastly, Arithmetic measures immediate memory, the task requires the use of attention, memory, and quick recall of mathematical functions. Jim’s score on the subtest Arithmetic was scattered, as a result, this subtest is an underestimate of his abilities in this area. Jim scored on the Average Range in the PSI, which measures short-term visual memory and attention. On the subtest cancellation, which measures visual selective attention, Jim scored on the Average Range. On the other hand, Jim scored on the High Range for the subtest Similarities, which measures the ability to rapidly process visual information. Jim’s displayed a weakness in the subtest Coding, which measures visual processing speed, short-term memory, and visual scanning abilities, placing him on the Low Average
