Wade Hampton was a well-known southerner. His childhood took place on a plantation in South Carolina. Hampton made his way into politics, and from there he went into the military. He served in the Civil War. After the war, he went back to politics. Wade Hampton was a Confederate soldier and a statesman.
Wade Hampton III was born on March 28, 1818, in Charleston, South Carolina on Hazel Street (Wade Hampton). He was born into an influential family (History.com Staff). His father was with the distinction in the War of 1812 and had been a U.S. senator. His grandfather was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, brigadier general and U.S. senator and congressman (History.com Staff). Hampton grew up on a plantation with many slaves (History.com Staff). The Louisiana plantation was called Houmas and the Mississippi plantation, were they plant cotton, was called Wild Woods (Wellman, Manly Wade,23). He serves as a state senator from 1856 to 1861(History.com Staff). Hampton resigned in early 1861 from his position in South Carolina state Senate and joined the Confederacy (History.com Staff). After the War Wade Hampton when back to politics (History.com Staff). He ran for governor but was bet by James Lawrence Orr. in 1865(Wade Hampton). In 1876 Hampton ran for governor of South Carolina (History.com Staff). Later in 1879, he won a seat in the U.S. Senate (History.com Staff). He contributes the Railroad Commissioner, from 1893 to 1897(Wade Hampton). He died on April 11, 1902, in Columbia and is laid to rest in Trinity Cathedral Churchyard (Wade Hampton).
