1. Wade Moore’s case is troubling to his physician because he seems to be presenting with very severe symptoms of a disease that may have been manageable if it had been diagnosed earlier.

A. What chronic disease is Wade currently suffering from?

Wade Moore is suffering from Cirrhosis of the liver because of choices he made earlier in life such as intravenous drug use. B. List the names of the three symptoms that Wade is experiencing that helped you come to this conclusion and what their effects are.

The first symptom that was seen in Wade was hepatic encephalopathy which is what caused his confusion, forgetfulness, and altered personality. The yellow tint to Wade’s skin can be attributed to jaundice because of impaired liver functioning. Finally, ascites is the cause of Wade’s stomach pain and swelling, as it causes an accumulation of fluid in the abdomen due to high pressure in the liver’s blood vessels

Based on Wade’s social history, this disease may have been caused by an infection. What do you believe may have been the cause of the infection and what is it called?

Wade has a history of drug use in the past which is where the infection most likely came from. The intravenous drug use caused hepatitis in Wade which eventually led to cirrhosis.

D. What pathological condition may be the cause of Wade coughing up blood?

Wade is experiencing esophageal varices which causes dilated veins in the esophagus and usually leads to bleeding in the esophagus. The bleeding within the esophagus led to Wade coughing up blood.

2. A secondary concern for Wade is that his fasting glucose is elevated as well.

A. What is the most probable cause of his elevated blood glucose?

Since Wade has cirrhosis the liver is severely damaged and scarred. This means that Wade’s liver is unable to process insulin and therefore the liver is unable to store glucose meaning that there is more glucose in Wade’s blood. At this point Wade is presenting symptoms of type 2
