The conclusion of “Wall of Fire Rising,” by Edwidge Danticat, the main character Guy was bothered all throughout the story. Guy was bothered by the decision of jumping out of a hot air balloon, and killing himself. Readers could take this act in so many different ways, one of them being guy is trying to resist his hopelessness by stealing a momentary second of glory, even though he knows it must end in demise. Throughout the story readers could tell Guy was just trying to get away, as readers we know he and his family are poverty traumatized, and he has to work hard daily to provide for his family. Readers could interpret the conclusion of “Wall of Fire Rising,” as Guy telling the readers he is free. Lastly, the conclusion could represent opportunity, or an escape from the people to rise above the underprivileged situation in which he is presently living in. “There is so much sadness in the faces of my people…” (79).This final recite by Little Guy is extremely significant because it is showing that Guy is living by how he wanted to live “either live freely or we should die” (80). The last recite fits the conclusion of “Wall of Fire Rising,” well because when Guy was first introduce to Little Guys speech he started to question life. Guy says “How do you think a man is judge after he’s gone?”(74).That ties into the speech, and the conclusion because Guy realized he was not living freely, so he figures the hot air balloon is considered living free.
