The poem I enjoyed the most of this week’s reading’s was Walt Whitman’s, “When I Heard The Learn’d Astronomer”. I noticed, Whitman’s free verse poem consist of one stanza with eight lines. Each line varies in length and has different stressed and unstressed syllables, which gives the poem an anecdotal tone. The first four lines of this poem, develop a starting point where Whitman describes the student’s reaction to the lecture as well as the moral of the poem. The author shows the difference between academic learning and experimental learning to express his theme.
