In the play Walter is concerned with the need to provide for his family and finding a way to live the American Dream. Walter is a working man but he wants more from life. Walter mainly struggles with money, morality and feeling enslaved in his job. Walters only concern is money, he cares more about money than his family. Walter has no morals and shows he only cares about money because he’s relying on his mom’s check in order to open his business, lacks empathy for his pregnant wife and loses his family's money.

He “says yes it's all gone”(Hansberry pg 129). It relates to him because he only thought about starting his own business instead of thinking about his beloved family who cares for him. He lost his family’s insurance money because he gave it to a friend and that friend ran off with it without Walter knowing. Walter thought that he was a good friend and that he wouldn't do such a thing. Walter said (“Why … Where was he...where is he” Hansberry pg 127) it relates to him because he did not have any idea on what was going on and when he found out he was very shocked and mad at the same time because of what they have done to him. He still had hopes that his friend with the money was still around that he was just sick. Then he lost his hopes because Bobo said that (“when a cat takes off with your money he dont leave you no roadmaps”Hansberry pg 128) . His Moma, Family, and loved ones were devastated because their lifetime earnings all went to waste instead of going to the family future expenses which was enough money to keep a family wealthy for a long time.
