Every person has had daydreams about doing things that we aren’t capable of or sometimes doing things that we want to do but can’t. In the short story The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty by James Thurber gives us all a glimpse into Walter Mitty's life and his life in daydreams. In real life he is a older man who is oblivious to the world on some occasions laughed at by random people on the street. While in his daydreams he is focused, determined ,and respected by his peers. In reality he sometimes goofs up and gets teased of laughed at. Take this quote for one instance “A woman who was passing laughed. ‘He said ‘Puppy biscuit,’ she said to her companion. ‘That man said ‘Puppy biscuit’ to himself.” Now in this case he just came out of a day dream suddenly remembering what he was going to buy. The woman laughed at him for suddenly just up and saying the item in the middle of the street. That's the kind of respect and treatment he gets normally. While in his day dreams he is honored and respected by his fellow men and peers. One case where he is in command of a ship of some sort he is going through a storm and refuses to give in to it. This is highlighted here “‘Full strength in No. 3 turret!’ The crew, bending to their various tasks in the huge, hurtling eight-engined Navy hydroplane, looked at each other and grinned. ‘The Old Man’ll get us through,’ they said to one another. ‘The Old Man ain’t afraid of Hell!’ . . .”. His men on this ship that he was dreaming of know he can get them through this, and they respect him even admire him for his knowledge and bravery. The two contrasting traits of being laughed at in his real life and being admired in his fantasy life show what Walter Mitty wants to be like verses what he actually is.
