Walter Payton was a sensational running back for the Chicago Bears. He was the best running back of his time. Walter was known as Sweetness due to his sweet playing. To most people anyway ,but to people like family, it was because he was one of the most benevolent men ever. Sweetness is one of the great legends of football. Walter Payton was born on July 25, 1954 in Columbus, MS. To Edward and Alyne Payton. Sweetness had two older siblings: Eddie and Pam. The Paytons were not the wealthiest people on the planet. They also were not the poorest. Both of his parents worked at a parachute factory, and his father also took on odd jobs for extra money. Edward and Alyne valued hard work over everything. So if he ever went out for a sport he would put one-hundred percent of his effort into it. They lost to the Colts 35-7. Payton ran for a monumental zero yards! The rest of the season did not go much better for the Bears. With a losing record of 4-10 overall, Walter never forgot the zero yards he gained in his first game. Those zero yards would spur him to train harder. By the end of his career, Payton had the all time record for rushing yards. Sweetness had gone to nine Pro Bowls, had ten awards, and had been player of the week three times. He scored 125 touchdowns equaling 750 points. Walter had 16,726 rushing yards, and 4538 receiving yards. He only fumbled the ball 68 times. Sweetness retired after the 1998 season.
