Walter Sobchak In The Film The Big Lebowski

Walter Sobchak plays a major role in the movie The Big Lebowski. He is a traumatized Vietnam veteran who tends to equate all general adversity and pain with that of his buddies from Vietnam who "died face down in the mud." Walter has clearly learned valuable lessons from watching his friends die in the chaos of war. Perhaps the most important one being the necessity of rules, another being his “never-surrender” attitude. Throughout the film, Walter expresses his dedication to these standards in every situation where he feels that “lines are crossed”. He claims to have “dabbled in pacifism for a while”, but also feels that “pacifism is not something to hide behind” when action is necessary.
