Through her character Walter Younger, Lorraine Hansberry created a real example of Black America’s struggle to reach the American Dream. Walter Younger’s American Dream was to become rich and to create a better life for him and his family. He was prepared to achieve that dream by investing in a liquor store to gain money. His dream became deferred because Willy who was one of the other investor in the liquor store ran away with all of the money. Hansberry demonstrates the Black America’s struggle to reach the American dream when Walter said, “Gone,what you mean Willy’s gone?... When Lindner comes to the Youngers home he talks to them about the community he implied that black people should not live in a white neighborhood. “Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities”(118). This evidence shows Walters dream being deferred because the hope of his family leaving their apartment and moving into a new beautiful home is crushed by Lindner.That dream for him is no longer attainable because Lindner says that black people should live in their own communities. Another of Walter’s American Dream of getting respect and dignity out of the world and being able to give his wife pearls and and his family material things was also deferred because he began to lose hope in his dreams and he started to cause his dreams to defer.
