The Waltz of the Snowflakes is the finale of Act 1 of the piece “The Nutcracker,” a contemporary ballet which is choreographed by Peter Wright. Although Peter Wright choreographed this version of the nutcracker, he simply created an adaption of the original. The original nutcracker was created by three different artists. First, E.T.A Hoffman was the one who created the story and plot of the nutcracker. Then we have Tschaikovsky as the one who created the music which fit perfectly along the dances and ballet which was choreographed by Marius Petipa.”The nutcracker tells the magical journey of a little girl named Clara and her new toy nutcracker on Christmas Day. The movements of Drosselmeyer seems as if he’s controlling or summoning the snowflakes into the scene. This connects with the story as Drosselmeyer is magical, so he should have the power to do this. It becomes obvious when Drosselmeyer brings his hands into the air and shakes them as if he’s sprinkling down snowflakes which is when the other dancers arrive dressed in pure white, performing the roles of the dancing snowflakes. This gives a slightly more logical approach to the dancing snowflakes because they’re being controlled by Drosselmeyer to celebrate Clara’s entrance to the Land of the Snow. After Drosselmeyer exits, the only dancers left on the stage are the snowflakes. However, even more snowflakes come from 1:00-1:20. The current snowflakes perform motions with their hands as if they were putting or spreadings things down which leads me to believe they are spreading snowflakes. The next thing you know, more snowflake dancers come on stage with a series of spins and gestures that are synchronized with the rest.
