Memorial Day is on the last Monday in May and is the day to remember the fallen soldiers who served for the United States of America. War is viewed in a different way by everybody and war has a different affect on everybody. The authors of the short story “Hunter’s in the Snow”, the poem “War is Kind”, and the novel The Things They Carried all view war and violence and the way war and violence affect people in different ways. Tobias Wolff writes about violence and the affect it has on people in “Hunter’s in the Snow”. Stephen Crane writes about war and the affect it has on people in “War is Kind”. Frank and Kenny bully Tub in a violent way which leads to even more violence. “The truck jumped the curb and kept coming, half on the street and half on the sidewalk” (Wolff 166). Frank and Kenny run the truck onto the sidewalk and almost hit Tub. “Kenny turned to Tub and asked if he was still on his diet” (Wolff 168). Kenny and Frank continue to bully Tub with verbal abuse. “All I can say is, it’s the first diet I ever heard of where you gained weight from it” (Wolff 168). Kenny is calling Tub fat by talking about his diet and saying that he has gained weight. Kenny likes to bully Tub in a violent way. “You were lost, big deal” (Wolff 168). Kenny and Frank get way out in front of Tub while walking during the hunt and they do not care about his well being. “What do you think that is, Tub? Kenny kicked at it, walnuts on vanilla icing” (Wolff 168). Kenny continues to pick on Tub’s weight by asking him if he thought the deer tracks that he missed was a type of food. The bullying leads to down a dark path to violence. Kenny is mad because they are not able to track down a deer. “I hate that post, Kenny said” (Wolff 170). “I hate that tree, Kenny said” (Wolff 170). “I hate that dog, Kenny said” (Wolff 170). Kenny points out three objects that he claims he “hates” and he shoots at all three of them. “Kenny turned to Tub and said I hate you” (Wolff 170). Kenny tells Tub that he “hates” him after the previous shootings from Kenny this strikes a fear in Tub who has been bullied by Kenny and with the mood Kenny is in at the moment. “Tub shot from the waist” (Wolff 170). Tub shoots Kenny after he thinks that Kenny is going to shoot him. The bullying of Tub from Frank and Kenny lead to violence from
